Conversions

A Conversion is a means of changing it so that it can be used in another way. The measure between two units the same quanity is called a conversion factor, so, 5 miles is also 8 Kilometres.

For each quanity we want to measure there is a basic metric unit. I have started this table, can you complete it.Once again

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The most commonly used units are:

Kilo - meaning x 1000 00000001000 metres = 1 kilometre

Centi - meaning (divide) 100 0000000a centmetre is 1 / 100 of a metre
000000000000000000000000100 centimetres = 1 metre

Mili - meaning (divide) 1000oooooooo a millimetre is 1 / 1000 of a metre
ooooooooooooooooooooooooo1000 millimetres = 1 metre

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.The basic unit of weight we will use is a gramme. Complete the sentence below describing the commonly used variations on this unit of measutement, as we did in the activity above:

A. __________________ is 1000 grammes.
The most commonly used unit of weight

A ________________ is 1 / 1000 of a gramme.
This unit is commonly used for weighing medicines.

A metric tonne (t) is 1000 kilogrammes = _____________ grammes
This unit is commonly used for weighing vehicles.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. A litre is used to measure volume or liquids, it can also be used to measure gases.

A _________________________ is 1 / 1000 of a litre.
This unit is commonly used for giving injections.

Remember: to multiply by 10 - add one nought.
00000000000000000to multiply by 100 - add two noughts, etc, etc.

000to divide by 10 - take off a nought or move the point one place left.
to divide by 100 - take off two noughts, etc, etc. 00000000000

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now you can try these, use the tables above to get your answers.

3. The distance to the nearest barracks is 5420 metres (m). What is this in kilometres?

4. You are told that an MFO box is 950 millimetres (mm) long. What is this in centimetres (cm)?

5. How many millilitres (ml) are there in a 1.5 litre (l) bottle of juice?

6. A tank engine can weigh 6500 kilogrammes (kg). What is this in metric tonnes?

LENGTH AND DISTANCE:

You want to buy some sealing strip for your windows, you measure in feet and inches, but you have to order it in metres and centimetres. You now know you need 5ft 5" . How much will you order in metres. (1" = 2.54cm)

000005ft 5" = _______________ inches 00000Now 1" = 2.54cm so

_______________ x 2.54 cm = ___________ cm

You can now convert this into metres and centimetres by taking each 100 cm as a metre and leaving the remainder as centimetres.

7. 000000__________ cm = _________ m ________ cm or _________m

remember to round off to the nearest whole number.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If we multiply to convert inches to centimetres then we
have to divide to get centimetres to inches:

8. 000You are given a piece of carpet measuring 3.81m x 1.27m and your room at home is 10ft 6" x 3ft 6" will the carpet fit

3.81m = __________ cm = _________ "

1.27m = __________ cm = _________"

so the carpet will measure

__________ " x _________ "

Now convert the room figures to inches:

10ft 6" = __________ "

3ft 6" = __________ "

Will this carpet fit your room
