The 24 hour Clock

The 24 hour clock is used by the Military because it prevents confusion between the first and second 12 hours within the day, ie, 3 O`Clock and 15.00 hours.

Convert from the 12 hour clock to the 24 hour clock:

In the morning the 12 hour clock tells us how many hours after midnight it is, so the hours before midday are exactly the same but written in the 24 hour format. Complete this table, remember to add 12 hours that have passed before midday.

007.45 am 0000007.45 hrs oo(note the nought before the 7).

A.00000000000000000 935 am ___________________ hrs

00000000000000000001200 am ___________________ hrs

0000000000000000000 730 pm___________________ hrs

00000000000000000002 16 pm ___________________ hrs

Convert from the 24 hour clock to the 12 hour clock:

All we have to do to convert a time from the 24 hour clock to 12 hour clock is to reverse the process. Again, we forget about the minutes and just work with the hours. We have to treat times differently depending on whether they are:

Before 1300 hours - in which cas it stays the same.

After 1359 hours, ie, 1300 hours or later - we take 12 (-) away.

Look at the 2 examples then complete table B below:

Example: 1000000 1530 hrs 0015 - 12 = 3 0003.30 pm

o0ooExample : 2 oooooo0715 hrs 00o00before 1300 0007.15 am

000000000000000623 hrs _____________0000___________
000000000000001245 hrs _____________0000___________

Add Timings in the 24 hour clock

YYou want to go home by train this weekend so you ring up British rail to find out the train times. You are told that they leave at 26 and 45 minutes past the hour all afternoon and the journey takes 1 hour 38 minutes.

You know you can make the 1645 hrs train and work out what time you would get home.

Departs 1645 hrs 00000 You need to set the time out like normal addition.

Journey + 13800000000Add the minutes first, ( 60 minutes to 1 hour)

Arrive 1823 hrs.

45 +38 = 83 minutes000 = 000(1 x 60 minutes) + 23 Minutes
000000000000001 hour

Write down the minutes and carry the hours across then add the hours as normal.

16 + 1 + 1 = 18 hrs

Now try these:

1. You go to see a film which starts at 1940 hrs and runs for 1 hr 56 minutes. What time will the film finish.

Start time =

Duration =

Finish time =

2. You go on leave to Scotland (Keep your ferry ticket for MMA) overnight. you set off at 2230 hrs, the last time you did this trip it took you 6 hrs and 45 minutes. If this journey takes you the same time, when will you reach home.

3. Your drive home normally takes 50 minutes. This evening you leave work at 1645 hrs but have to go to the shop on the way, this takes 30 minutes. what time do you arrive home.

Leave =

Drive =

Shop =

Remember to add the minutes first then the hours.
