It could be possible
that you have not done any basic arithmetic for a long time in
the appointments that you hold, I know that your job spec will
not allow for it, so take a look at the following pages and refresh
your self, these pages will help you get through your threshold
test and onto the course. The first part is just basic arithmetic
and will take about 30 minutes, no longer, nevertheless concentrate
on accuracy and not speed. At the end of the day its money in
your pocket.

Decimals
look for the location of the decimal point. You
will need to lay out the sum so that the decimal point is underlined
throughout, this will aid you, and prevent any miss calculation.
Try the following, then click below number 6 to check all your
answers. It is not always necessary to show all the decimal places
following a number. You will be asked to round up to 2 decimal
places during your threshold test, this will mean that only two
numbers after the decimal place are required. However if you only
have 2 numbers after the decimal place then you do not need to
do any more, if there is one number after the decimal place, but
asked for a 2 digit decimal answer then add a zero, i.e, 26.5
is really 26.50.

Averages:
An average is a middle point to a set
of numbers, so, what you would do is count up all the numbers
you have together then dividing the total sum by the number of
items in the set. The average is used to look at the overall performance
rather than just one result.
|
|
|
How
to work out the sum: You need to work
out the average score of your shoot, below is the practices of
each shoot you have done, all you do is add the numbers in practices
1 - 5 then divide the total score by the number of practices ,i.e.
5.
|
|
|
Your Score
56
60
54
58
57
|
|
|
|
Your score is 285
points 56 + 60 + 54 + 58 + 57 = 285. we now divide the total number
(285) with the number of practices (5).
= 285 Divided by
5 = 57
57 is your avarage
score.
Note. If you are
using your computer calculator the divide symbol is /

You are going though a phase were you are starting to look at
older woman. The only problem is, that you are aged 19 and the
woman you fancy are between 66 years old and 80 years old. This

Working out a missing number
from a set. You have to qualifie for
the shooting team with an avarage score of 27 over five 30 round
practices, however, so far you have shot 4 practices. The scores
you have are:
27000
28 00025 00030
The problem is, can you qualifie
for the shooting team and what score do you require in your
next shoot. "So to do this",
We know the average is 27 over
5 practices, so we say
27 x 5 = 135 points.
Once we know the total, we can
take away the sum of the numbers that we know which will leave
us with our one missing number:
Add together 27, 28, 25, and
30 = 110 points
Take away (27 x 5 = 135) the
total numbers 135
The Answer is 25 points
(Easy) you try number 5.

Ten MICKS go off on the ale
for a week (money from the PRI, not) you have been told that
if you miss manage your money then you will be shot on return

(its a cheap bar).
Your total daily allowance is
£3.06 x 10 = £ ??.??
Your Total for the week is £
??;?? x ? = ???.??
You have to drink the following
drinks that total the amounts below and on the following days:
Monday, Vodka, £ 32:70
Tuesday, Beer, £ 23:90
Wednesday, Gin, £ 36:45
Thursday, Beer, £ 27:60
Friday, Beer, £ 26:56
Saturday, Own choice, £ 20:81
How much drinking money will
you have for rum on a Sunday, remember Sunday is a holy day.

Proportion
A proportion is a pert or a fraction, the size
of which is determined by some relationship, for example,
if we say that one quantity is in proportion to another we
mean that there is a relationship between the two and if one
changes then so will the other, you need to understand this.
Direct
Proportion This is when an increase in one number
or quantity leads to an increase in another, so, if it takes
2 men to build a 60ft wall in one day, then it will take 4
men to build a wall 120ft long in the same time (one day).
Therefore the number of feet to the wall is directly proportional
to the number of men working. In other words the wall size
will increase and so will the manpower.
Inverse
Proportion This is when an increase in one leads
to a corresponding decrease in the other, so, if it takes
5 men to lay a carpet in two days then it will take 10 men
to lay the same carpet in one day, so the time required is
inversely proportional to the number of men. In other words
many hands make light work.
|
|
An example of Direct Proportion:
Your ordering bar stock and
need 4 barrels of MICK best bitter, 5 barrels of Who you looking
at.
MICK best Bitter £ 42.70
Who you looking at.£ 49.30
Basically the more you order
the it will cost. So the price is directly proportional to
the number of barrels beer.
If the price for one barrel of MICK
best bitter is £ 42.70 then 4 barrels is
£42.70 x 4 = £ 170.80
What is hard about that, if you find
problems try working out the cost of 4 barrels of who you
looking at:
The price of 1 barrels is, £ ??.?? x 4 = ???.??

An example of Inverse Proportion:
Whilst working in the training
wing, your Friday afternoon job is to lay out the classrooms
for Monday. Today, you have 3 rooms to prepare which will
take you 1 hour but 2 mates have offered to help. How long
will it take the 3 of you to complete the task.
If it takes 60 minutes to
set up 3 classrooms then it will take 20 minutes for each
room. Look.
There are 3 people,
There is 3 x 20 minutes in
60 minutes
Therefore it will be 20 minutes
each. Easy.
All that happened was that
the time was divided up into 3 because there is 3 times the
amount of people doing the work. Very logical.
There is a formula to this,
read the statement above once again and then think of the
question, look how I have laid it sum out. The "S"
stands for statement and the "Q" stands for the
question.
S 0001
man 000x 00S00
60 Minutes = 20 minutes
--------------000000--------------------
Q000
3 men 00000000000000000000000000000
The formula is upside down
compared to the direct proportion formula, this seems sensible
if you think that now as we increase one quantity we decrease
the other.
Listed below are some proportion
sums to do. Click for the answers at the bottom of this section.

ammunition at the end of a range day. Each of the 9 Soldiers
gets 42 rounds. Three of them, however are not keen to shoot
again and quite happy to let those who want to shoot use their
share. How many rounds does each of the 6 Soldiers left, now
get.

Try this, this is another
example of the use of inverse proportion. The faster you go
the less time it takes to get there.
Your normal journey home,
averaging 30 miles / h in the rush hour, takes you 40 minutes.
You`ve stayed late at work this evening and you`ll be able
to average 50 miles / h now that the roads are clear. How
long will it take you to get home.
